Santa Ben's Journey at the Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School
Established in 1937 by Charles W. Howard, a visionary farmer from Albion, New York, the Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School was born from a desire to elevate the portrayal of Santa Claus. Disheartened by Santas with frayed suits and inadequate knowledge of reindeer, Charles set out to create a school dedicated to crafting the perfect Santa. From its humble beginnings with just three students, the school blossomed into a Christmas-themed wonderland, complete with barns, a train, and, of course, reindeer.
My journey at this prestigious institution was nothing short of magical. The training and workshops were exceptional, equipping me with the skills to embody Santa Claus with authenticity and joy. I had the privilege of joining the school choir, where I sang alongside a talented Claus family, creating harmonious holiday melodies.
One of the most enchanting experiences was working with real reindeer, a testament to the school's commitment to authenticity. I also had the thrill of taking to the Macy's parade float, a nod to the school's rich history with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, where Charles Howard himself was the featured Santa from 1948 to 1965.
Building toys and engaging in countless other festive activities, I found myself surrounded by a community of joyful and jolly Santas, each dedicated to spreading Christmas cheer. Under the guidance of Tom and Holly Valent, the school continues to thrive in Midland, Michigan, welcoming around 300 eager students each year.
My time at the Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School has been an invaluable chapter in my journey, enriching my skills and connecting me with a wonderful network of fellow Santas. It's an experience that has truly deepened my love for the art of being Santa and the magic of the holiday season.
